Liverpool were attempting to win three successive home league matches against United for the first time in nearly a decade, having only been beaten once in the previous 10 competitive meetings. Manchester City experienced rather more difficulty at home to Crystal Palace in recent seasons, taking one point out of a possible six prior to Sunday’s match, while struggling Sheffield United were in desperate need of extending their unbeaten top-flight home run against Tottenham to seven games.
